Pornită pe drumul muzicii în 2007, Walkways provine din străfundurile Tel Aviv-ului, ambiţioasă şi decisă asupra unui profesionalism care se revarsă din primul moment, atât din muzică cât şi din cunoaşterea membrilor trupei.
Cu un album la activ, „Safe in sound”, mixat de nimeni altul decât Jens Bogren, Walkways se remarcă printr-o lirică care îşi trage esenţa din experienţe personale şi fragilitatea minţii povestită de un instrumental în care regăseşti elemente diverse, de la prog la alternative şi djent şi un vocal care pendulează între curat şi ţipete antrenate. Cu cele 11 piese ale sale, „Safe in sound” menţine ascultătorul alert printr-o alternare continuă între unele pasaje care pun accent pe emoţie şi altele care transpun energie în fiecare firicel de compoziţie care întregeşte piesele.
Walkways a deschis cea de-a doua zi a festivalului ARTmania de anul acesta şi ştiindu-ne pe noi, mari fani ai unor trupe din această sferă, nu puteam rata ocazia unui scurt interviu. Vorbim despre scena din Tel Aviv, despre albumul trupei şi planuri de viitor cu băieţii din Walkways (versiune în română şi engleză).
O scurtă introducere pentru cititorii noştri. Cum aţi descrie istoricul trupei în trei cuvinte?
Walkways: Istoricul… groaznic (râde), proces, înainte.
Cum aţi descrie abordarea voastră a muzicii? Dacă ajunge cineva pe Facebook-ul vostru şi vă ascultă ce impresie credeţi că va avea?
Walkways: Sperăm că va asculta detaliile din muzică, ţinem mult la detaliu. Sperăm că va asculta calitatea, în primul rând şi în al doilea rând, credem, că emoţia. Încercăm să punem emoţie în muzica noastră.
Am ascultat câte ceva din ce aţi lansat şi într–adevăr atenţia pentru detaliu iese în evidenţă. Cred că veţi fi preferaţii mei astă seară.
Walkways: A, minunat, mulţumim.
Am vrut să vă întreb despre primul album, „Safe în sound”. Cum aţi ajuns să lucraţi cu Jens (Opeth, Katatonia, Soilwork)?
Walkways: A devenit foarte popular în Israel pentru că alte trupe lucrau cu el şi doi dintre noi sunt ingineri de sunet deci erau familiari cu munca sa. De asemenea, a lucrat cu trupe care ne-au influenţat. Nu ştim dacă vom lucra cu el şi la al doilea album, dar primul a fost o experienţă grozavă.
Cum aţi luat legătura cu el?
Walkways: Via e-mail, practic. Răspunde tuturor. Desigur, muzica trebuie să sune cum trebuie, vor să lucreze cu trupe care sunt la un anumit nivel şi care sună ok.
Ăsta este un compliment la adresa trupei voastre. Cum e scena metal în Tel Aviv?
Walkways: Nu este atât de periculos cum lasă impresia media. Este totul supradimensionat ca să pară înfricoşător. Sunt oameni care încearcă să oprească concerte precum cel al lui Roger Waters, dar nu contează care–ţi sunt opiniile politice, dacă ai ceva de zis, spune, nu trebuie să protestezi. Cântă. Muzica este pentru oameni, nu pentru guvern. Mai politici de atât nu o să devenim. Şi noi ne simţim speriaţi când mergem în alte ţări după ce s-a întâmplat în Paris, de exemplu. E periculos peste tot acum. Cum afectează scena din Israel asta se reflectă în faptul că trupele străine trebuie să zboare până aici pentru că nu pot veni altfel datorită graniţelor cu ţările vecine. Costurile sunt mai mari şi logistica mai complicată, dar şi pentru noi, pentru că nu putem merge în ţările vecine să cântăm.
Townsend a cântat aseară. Veţi deschide pentru el în septembrie. Ce părere aveţi despre proiect?
Walkways: Chiar vorbeam despre asta. Cred că a fost primul concert din turneu aseară şi cel din septembrie va fi ultimul. Suntem încântaţi, iar show-ul de aseară a fost grozav. Suntem încântaţi şi că am apucat să-l cunoaştem în backstage şi am vorbit cu el despre concertul din Israel. Părea încântat. Credem că e grozav fiindcă cui îi place Devin, are şanse să îi placă şi de noi.
Lucraţi la o continuare a „Safe in sound”. Ce s-a schimbat? Fiindcă sunt ceva ani între cele două materiale.
Walkways: Multe experienţe grele despre care să scriem, iar muzical suntem mai concentraţi. Primul album aborda multe genuri. Am experimentat cu multe sunete şi ştim ce vrem să îmbunătăţim şi să facem mai bine. E mai structurat.
Am văzut că lucraţi şi la un videoclip. Îmi puteţi spune câte ceva despre el?
Walkways: Avem câteva videoclipuri la care lucrăm. Unul pe care l-am filmat de curând. Pentru unul din ele am fost în genunchi şi mâini pentru 13 ore, ţipând la podea. Iar în altul Ran va fi acoperit în sânge. Va fi interesant.
Care sunt aşteptările voastre pentru concert?
Walkways: Sperăm că vor fi mulţi oameni pentru că atunci când sunt mulţi dăm 300%, aşa că avem nevoie de energia lor. Şi sperăm să căpătăm nişte fani noi dintre oamenii care nu ne-au mai auzit.
ARTmania are o reputaţie cunoscută pentru aducerea unor trupe care îşi fac mulţi fani.
Walkways: Anul trecut au fost cei de la Black Peaks, pe care îi iubim.
De fapt, ei au fost descoperirea mea preferată de anul trecut.
Walkways: Trupele care ajung aici peste un an sunt mult mai mari. Sperăm să fie rândul nostru.
Vă simţiţi bine în România?
Walkways: Da, ne distrăm de minune. Vii la concert diseară?
Sigur, voi fi în faţa scenei. Mulţumim pentru interviu

Stubbornly walking the pathways of music since 2007, Walkways comes off, from the realms of Tel Aviv, as ambitious and openly decisive on being as professional as possible, and you could easily capture that both from the band’s music as from meeting the people behind it.
With one record in its curriculum, „Safe in sound”, mixed by no other than Jens Bogren, Walkways stands out through the lyrics that draw their own essence from personal experiences and from mind’s fragility and through being narrated by versatile instrumentals, that go from alternative to prog, and by the vocals that swing easily between cleans and refined screams. With the help of its 11 tracks, the record keeps the listener caught in a web of continous alternations between some passages that emphasize on emotion and others that transpose energy in each and every section that makes the songs a whole.
Walkways opened the second day of the ARTmania festival and as our readers know already, we here at The Intermission are big fans of bands from this spectrum, so we couldn’t have missed the chance to interview the band. Let’s see what Walkways have to say about the band, their record and the scene in Tel Aviv.
A small introduction for our readers. How would you describe your band’s background in three words?
Walkways: Background… awful (laughs), process, forward.
How would you describe your approach on music? If someone comes on your Facebook profile and checks you out what do you think that listener would think about your music?
Walkways: Hopefully they would listen to the amount of detail in the music, we’re very particular about details. So hopefully he would listen to the quality, that’s one thing that’s important and the second one we think it’s emotion. We try to deliver emotion through the music.
Actually, I listened to some of the stuff and the attention to details stands out. I think you’ll be my favorite from tonight’s line-up.
Walkways: Ah, great, thank you.
I wanted to ask you about your first record, „Safe in sound”. How did you end up working with Jens (Opeth, Katatonia, Soilwork)?
Walkways: He became quite popular in Israel because other bands worked with him and two of us are sound engineers so we’re familiar with his work. Also, the bands that he worked with influenced us. We don’t know if we’ll do a second album with him, but the first one was a great experience.
How did you reach him?
Walkways: Just by e-mail. He answers to everybody. But of course, the music needs to be ok, they want to work with bands that are at a certain level and that sound ok.
That’s a huge compliment on your band, as well. How’s the metal scene in Tel Aviv?
Walkways: It’s not as dangerous as the media lets people think. It’s all bulked up to seem scary for outsiders. There are people that are trying to boicot other concerts like with Roger Waters, but it doesn’t matter what are your political views, if you have something to say you can come and say it, you don’t have to boicot. Play music. Music is for the people, not for the government. That’s as political that we’re going to get.
We get scared when we go to other countries after what happened in Paris, for example. It’s dangerous everywhere now. The way it really affects the music scene in Israel is that touring bands have to fly here because they cannot drive through the borders of the surrounding countries. The costs are expensive, the logistics are tougher and for us as well, we can’t just drive to other countries and play.
Townsend just played ARTmania last night. You’ll be opening for him in September. What do you think about him?
Walkways: We were just talking about it. I think this is his first show in the tour and the one in September will be his last. We’re very excited about it, and the show last night was amazing. We’re really excited we got to meet him backstage and we talked to him a little bit about the show and he’s also excited to come to Israel which is great and we think that people that like Devin will like our music as well.
You’re working at a follow up for „Safe in sound”. What’s changed? Because there is a years difference between the two.
Walkways: A lot of shitty experiences to write about and musically is more focused. The first album was all over the place in terms of genre. We’re experiencing with a lot of sounds and we know what we want to improve and do better. More focused, structured.
I saw that you’re working at a video. Can you tell me something about that?
Walkways: We have a couple of videos that we’re working on. One we recently shot. For one of them some of us were on their knees and hands for 13 hours, screaming at the floor. And in another video Ran is going to be completely covered in blood. It’s going to be interesting.
What are your expectations for the show?
Walkways: Hopefully a lot of people because when there are a lot of people we reach to 300%, so we need the energy of the crowd. And we hope we get some new fans from the people that never heard us before.
ARTmania has a reputation of bringing fans to new bands.
Walkways: Last year there was Black Peaks, which is a band we really like.
In fact, that was my favorite discovery last year.
Walkways: The bands that come here one year later are a lot bigger. Hopefully it’s our turn.

Walkways: Yeah, it’s been a blast. You’re coming to the show tonight?
