Top finaliști anul trecut la Wacken Metal Battle, cei de la Graufar vin anul acesta în concert în cadrul finalei din România, de pe 28 iunie din club Quantic. Stăm de vorbă despre eveniment și Wacken cu solistul și chitaristul trupei, Gernot.
Sunetul vostru îmbină black metal, death metal și elemente melodice într-un mod foarte coerent. Cum a evoluat acest stil hibrid pentru voi, ca trupă?
Nu am avut niciodată un stil anume în minte când am fondat trupa. Pur și simplu, tuturor ne place să ascultăm atât black metal, cât și death metal. Așa s-a născut această combinație. Cântăm doar ceea ce ni se pare natural și autentic, și încercăm să structurăm piesele într-un mod variat și coerent.
Albumul vostru de debut, Scordalus, abordează o gamă largă de teme. Cum a fost procesul creativ din spatele acestuia – din punct de vedere muzical și liric?
Pentru albumul de debut, am venit cu niște riff-uri și idei, iar apoi am transformat totul în piese împreună. Nu am avut un concept clar – pur și simplu am lucrat la piese până când am fost mulțumiți de ele, ceea ce s-a întâmplat destul de repede.
În privința versurilor, aproape întotdeauna le scriem după ce părțile instrumentale sunt gata. La fel a fost și în cazul Scordalus. De obicei, în timpul compunerii, apare o idee sau o emoție care stabilește direcția pe care o vor lua versurile. Temele pot varia destul de mult și adesea reflectă aspecte care ne preocupă de mult timp sau nemulțumirea față de anumite probleme sociale.
Scrieți versuri atât în germană, cât și în engleză. Ce determină alegerea limbii pentru o anumită piesă sau temă?
Ne lăsăm ghidați de instinct. Nu am vrut să scriem doar versuri în engleză, ci am vrut să integrăm puțin și limba noastră maternă. Unele piese pur și simplu se potrivesc mai bine cu versuri în germană decât în engleză.
Felicitări pentru intrarea în top 10 la Wacken Metal Battle 2024! Cum a fost să cântați pe o scenă atât de legendară?
Mulțumim! A fost o mare onoare să avem șansa de a urca pe acea scenă imensă și să ne interpretăm muzica în fața unui public atât de numeros. Din păcate, cele 20 de minute au trecut într-o clipă și ne-a luat ceva timp să realizăm ce s-a întâmplat cu adevărat.
Care a fost cel mai intens sau memorabil moment din experiența voastră la Wacken – fie pe scenă, fie în culise?
Întreaga experiență va rămâne cu noi pentru totdeauna – e greu să alegem un singur moment. Întregul backstage a fost impresionant, iar organizarea și modul în care am fost tratați au fost cu adevărat de clasă mondială. Un moment deosebit de intens a fost când am avut probleme tehnice chiar înainte de spectacol, care s-au rezolvat abia cu 20 de secunde înainte să începem să cântăm. A fost, cu siguranță, o situație tensionată. În rest, totul a fost pur și simplu copleșitor – în cel mai bun sens posibil.
Versurile voastre explorează critica socială, laturile întunecate ale umanității și reflecții personale. Ce vă determină să abordați aceste teme în muzică?
Așa cum am menționat, versurile tratează teme care ne preocupă de mult timp sau reflectă nemulțumiri legate de anumite aspecte ale societății. De asemenea, am inclus experiențe personale directe în unele piese. De cele mai multe ori, în timp ce compun o piesă, îmi vine în minte o temă care pare să se potrivească cu starea transmisă de muzică.
Lucrați deja la al doilea album, programat pentru primăvara lui 2026. Ne puteți oferi câteva indicii despre direcția muzicală sau tematică?
Va fi cu siguranță un album mai variat decât debutul. În medie, piesele sunt puțin mai lungi și cred că se vede clar că am evoluat muzical, fără să ne pierdem rădăcinile. Din punct de vedere liric, cele mai multe piese abordează teme precum efemeritatea, moartea și lipsa de sens a multor lucruri. Nu vreau să dezvălui prea multe deocamdată, dar albumul este aproape gata și suntem foarte mulțumiți de cum sună.
Recunoașterea primită la Wacken vă aduce mai multă presiune sau motivație pentru noul material?
În orice caz, a fost o sursă de motivație – ne-a deschis câteva uși și suntem foarte recunoscători pentru asta. Singura presiune pe care am simțit-o a venit din reacțiile extrem de pozitive primite pentru primul album. Bineînțeles că ne dorim ca al doilea album să fie și mai bun decât Scordalus, dar cred că pot spune cu încredere că vom reuși acest lucru cu noile piese. Apropo, pe 28 iunie vom oferi publicului o mostră din viitorul album, interpretând trei piese noi.
Veți concerta în curând în România, la finala Wacken Metal Battle. Ce așteptări aveți de la acest concert și de la publicul român?
Niciunul dintre noi nu a fost vreodată în România, așa că nu știm exact la ce să ne așteptăm, dar abia așteptăm să venim. În general, Wacken Metal Battle înseamnă să aduci oamenii și țările împreună prin muzica asta, iar noi ne simțim foarte onorați să fim invitați ca oaspeți la o finală într-o altă țară.
Am observat că seara pare să se încline mai mult spre death metal și metalcore din punct de vedere stilistic, dar sperăm ca publicul să fie deschis și către puțin black metal. Oricum, suntem foarte entuziasmați să cântăm în Club Quantic, pe care îl știm deja din poze și videoclipuri – arată absolut minunat.

Your sound blends black metal, death metal, and melodic elements in a very cohesive way. How did that hybrid style evolve for you as a band?
We never had a specific style in mind when we founded the band. We all simply love listening to black metal and also to death metal. That’s how this mix came together. We just play what feels right and natural to us, and we try to structure the songs in a varied and coherent way.
Your debut album Scordalus dives into a wide range of topics. What was the creative process like behind it – musically and lyrically?
For our debut, I just came up with some riffs and ideas, and we turned them into songs together. We didn’t have a real concept — we just worked on the songs until we were satisfied with them, which happened very quickly.
As for the lyrics, we almost always write them after the instrumental parts are complete. It was the same with Scordalus. Usually, an idea or an emotion emerges during the composing process, and that shapes the direction the lyrics take. The topics can vary a lot and often reflect issues that have occupied us for a long time, or express our dissatisfaction with certain aspects of society.
You write lyrics in both German and English. What determines the language choice for a particular track or theme?
We go with our gut feeling. We didn’t want to write only in English — we also wanted to incorporate our native language. Some songs simply feel more suited to German lyrics than to English ones.
Congratulations on reaching the Top 10 at Wacken Metal Battle 2024! How did it feel to perform on such a legendary stage?
Thank you! It felt like a great honor to have the chance to stand on that huge stage and perform our music in front of so many people. Unfortunately, the 20 minutes go by in the blink of an eye, and it took us a while to fully realize what had just happened.
What was the most intense or memorable moment from your Wacken experience — whether on stage or behind the scenes?
The whole experience will stay with us forever — it’s hard to pick just one moment. The backstage area was impressive, and the organization and the way we were treated were truly world-class.
One particularly intense moment was when we faced technical problems shortly before our performance — they were only solved 20 seconds before we had to go on stage. That was definitely nerve-racking. Other than that, we were genuinely overwhelmed — in the best possible way — by everything.
Your lyrics explore social criticism, the darker sides of humanity, and personal reflections. What drives you to confront these themes in your music?
As mentioned before, the lyrical themes often deal with issues that have been on our minds for a long time or express our dissatisfaction with certain aspects of society. I’ve also incorporated direct personal experiences into some of the songs. Most of the time, while I’m working on a track, a certain theme or emotion pops up that just fits the overall mood of the music.
You’re already working on your second album, scheduled for spring 2026. Can you give us a glimpse into the direction it’s taking — musically or thematically?
It’s definitely going to be a more varied album than our debut. On average, the songs are a bit longer, and I think it’s clear that we’ve grown musically without losing touch with our roots.
Lyrically, most songs deal with themes like transience, death, and the meaninglessness of many things. I don’t want to give away too much yet, but the album is nearly finished, and we’re more than happy with how it sounds.
Does the recognition you received at Wacken add pressure or motivation for the new material?
It’s definitely been motivating — it opened a few doors for us, for which we’re very grateful. The only real pressure came from the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received for Scordalus. Of course, we want the second album to surpass that, and I think I can confidently say we’ll achieve that with the new songs.
By the way, we’ll be giving the audience a taste of the upcoming album on June 28, when we’ll perform three new tracks live.
You’ll soon be performing in Romania at the Wacken Metal Battle Final. What are your expectations from this concert and from the Romanian metal crowd?
None of us has been to Romania before, so we’re not exactly sure what to expect — but we’re really looking forward to it. In general, the Wacken Metal Battle is about connecting people and countries through this music, and we feel very honored to be invited as guests to a final in another country.
We noticed that the evening seems to lean more towards death metal and metalcore, stylistically. We hope the crowd will also be open to a bit of black metal. Either way, we’re super excited to play at Club Quantic — we’ve seen photos and videos of the venue, and it looks absolutely awesome.
