Trupa australiană de Astral Space core, cum îşi spune ea, Alithia, este una dintre cele mai interesante apariţii din ultimii ani, chiar şi luând în considerare faptul că vorbim despre scena australiană. Trupa are deja un album în portofoliu, „To the edge of time„, şi se pregăteşte de un nou asalt muzical. A deschis pentru trupe precum Animals As Leaders, Dead Letter Circus sau Ne Oblivicaris şi sâmbătă îi puteţi vedea într-o combinaţie mai mult decât potrivită cu Vulture Industries, printre alţii, la primul eveniment Guest Metal Night organizat de Guest, în Fabrica. Vorbim puţin cu Tibor, bassistul trupei.
Melbourne are multe trupe faine. Cum este scena când competiţia este atât de mare?
Alithia: Australia are de câţiva ani o scenă prog puternică. Trupe precum Karnivool şi Dead Letter Circus au setat o ştafetă ridicată. Deci este o comunitate puternică şi susţinătoare de muzicieni şi fani, foarte uniţi. O mare parte din publicul de la fiecare concert este format din muzicienii din celelalte trupe… suntem toţi prieteni şi ne susţinem, un lucru important pentru a avea un mediu bun.
Scena prog este fantastică, cu multe trupe bune de progressive, post-rock, psihedelice şi experimentale. Scena în sine ne susţine şi este o mare familie. Cu toate astea există o boală în mainstream care pare expulzată de muzica noastră… aşa că artiştii care apar la festivalurile mari şi la radio sunt… cum să zic… lasă mult de dorit pe partea de creativitate şi sunt neinspirate. Nu sunt multe trupe creative cu muzică interesantă dar care au succes aici, dar bănuiesc că asta se întâmplă peste tot, nu? Australia poate fi o belea când vine vorba de cântat. Trebuie să investeşti sute de dolari în marketing ca show-urile tale să aibă succes… simţul comunităţii nu este chiar viu fără puţină promovare… ceea ce face ca muzică neobişnuită să fie greu acceptată.
De ce aţi hotărât să mergeţi în turneu în Europa?
Alithia: Am înregistrat primul album în Budapesta şi ne-a marcat… ne-a transformat… nu doar auditiv, ci ca oameni. Fiind din Australia ne-a permis să ne concentrăm pe muzică mai mult. Suntem departe de muncă, probleme şi altele. Când ne-am întors în Australia după acel album, multă lume ne spunea că nu sună ca o trupă locală… ci că sună european, aşa că ne-a plăcut influenţa şi drept urmare impactul asupra muzicii noastre comparativ cu a colegilor australieni, deci am vrea să continuăm procesul din moment ce impactul asupra noastră e evident. Nu cred că o să mai înregistrăm vreodată în Australia, o să continuăm să găsim locaţii din lume care să ne expună unor noi experienţe. Am ales Atena fiindcă vocalul John are sânge grecesc. Bunicii sunt din Atena, Thessaloniki, aşa că am ales Grecia datorită originii sale şi fiindcă e o oportunitate să redescopere cine este.
Ce fel de sacrificii şi costuri a avut turneul?
Alithia: Wow… bună întrebare… de unde să încep. În primul rând… datorii. Cu toţii avem credite bancare făcute… trupa ne loveşte în portofel în fiecare săptămână, la fiecare salariu. Avem transferuri automate din salarii în contul trupei. Nu facem compromisuri la calitatea înregistrărilor, videoclipurilor sau a muzicii. Am repetat câte 2-3 nopţi pe săptămână ca să terminăm albumul şi apoi am înregistrat demo-uri săptămânal. Ne ducem la repetiţii extenuaţi după locurile de muncă de rahat… nu dormim prea mult… şi mulţi din noi au făcut compromisuri în relaţii. Celălalt sacrificiu derivă din speranţă. Pui fiecare minut, gând, dolar, emoţie în ea… îţi pasă de ea ca şi cum ar fi finalul lumii… şi în final, poate nimănui nu îi va păsa… aşa că ne asigurăm să facem treabă bună ca măcar dacă murim… albumul va fi testamentul de care vom fi mândri. Poate nu vom rezista financiar pe termen lung ca să putem continua ce iubim… dar nu vom înceta până nu aruncăm şi chiuveta şi apoi bucătăria.
Mergeţi din nou în studio. Ce idei aveţi în plan?
Alithia: Albumul va fi o creştere masivă faţă de ultimul. Avem un nou membru, Jeffrey, la percuţie, voce şi clape. A adăugat spiritul său latin şi sunetul este mai tribal în ritm. Groove-ul este mai intens… mai electronic, e heavy, e soft… şi piesele sunt mai intense, compoziţiile au evoluat. Sunt multe piese noi care vor surprinde.
Aveţi un mod unic de a cânta. Cum arată un jam session?
Alithia: (râde) Au… Doamne… foarte încet merge… toţi spunem idei şi le încercăm pe toate… toate. Ia mult timp.
Alte planuri pentru anul asta?
Alithia: Ne întoarcem acasă după turneu şi cântăm la Progfest şi apoi lansăm albumul. Anul viitor îl lansăm, apoi turneu în Europa, Australia şi lansăm şi un film.

Melbourne has so many great bands. How’s that like, dealing with so many great bands in the same scene?
Alithia: Australia has for the past few years a very strong prog scene. Bands like Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus have set a high standard. So there is a very strong and supportive community of musicians and supporters who are very united. A large percentage of the audience at every show is made of musicians from other bands… we are all friends and very supportive, this is quite crucial in having a supportive environment.
How’s the Australian music scene?
Alithia: The prog scene is absolutely fantastic with lots of great progressive, post-rock, psychedelic and experimental bands. The scene itself is incredibly supportive and like a big family. However there seems to be quite a disease in the general mainstream who seem to be quite closed to this kind of music… and so the artists that get invited to play the main festivals and get played on the radio are… how shall we say… have a lot to be desired on the creative side of things and is rather uninspiring. There are not a lot of creative bands with interesting and exciting music who generate much success in Australia… but I suppose the same can be said pretty much the same for anywhere in the world, right? Australia can also be a real pain in the ass to play. You have to invest thousands of dollars of marketing for your shows to work… the sense of underground community is not really alive there without hype… which makes it much harder for music outside of the ordinary to spike.
Why have you decided to take the tour all the way up in Europe?
Alithia: We first Recorded the first album in Budapest, Hungary and it had a profound impact on us… it transformed us entirely… not just our sound… but as people. Also being away from Australia allowed us to focus on the work much more. We are away from our distractions, our jobs, our problems and the rest. When we returned to Australia after the first record many people said we didn’t sound like an Australian band… they said we sounded European… so we liked that the influence had shown… and as a result, the impact is quite clear there is a significant difference between our sound and that of our peers back in Australia, so of course we wanted to continue this process as it’s impact on our music and individuals is clear. In fact, it doesn’t seem we will ever record an album in Australia again, we will continue finding locations around the world that keep exposing us to new experiences. We chose Athens because our singer John Rousvanis has Greek blood in his veins. His grandparents are from Athens and Thessaloniki, so we chose Greece because of his origin and it is a healthy way for him to connect with his roots and further discover who he is.
What kind of sacrifices and costs did this tour brought on?
Alithia: Wow… great question… fuck… where do we start. The first one… debt… we all have credit card and bank loan debts… this band hits our wallets every week in every paycheck. We actually have automatic transfers from our bank accounts on pay day to our band bank account. We don’t compromise on quality of recording, videos, art… or music. We’ve been rehearsing 2-3 nights a week writing this album then recording demos on the weekend. We go to rehearsals absolutely exhausted from our shitty jobs… we don’t sleep much… and most of us have compromised or non-existent relationships. The other sacrifice I suppose comes from your hope. You put every minute, every thought, every dollar, every emotion into it… you care about it like it’s the Armageddon… and in the end, maybe nobody will care… so then we have to make sure we get the process right so that at least if we die… the record can be on our grail as something we are proud about. Maybe there is no hope for us to make this a long term financially viable ambition so we can focus on doing what we love… but we won’t stop without throwing the kitchen sink and then the kitchen!
You are planning on hitting the studio again. What new ideas do you have in store?
Alithia: This record is a massive growth in our sound from our last album. Since we have had a new member join, Jeffrey who plays percussion, vocals and keyboards. He has added his Latin flavor and so the songs sound much more tribal in the rhythms. The grooves are much bigger… it’s much more electronic… it’s heavier, it softer… and the melodies are much stronger… our songwriting has grown immensely! There are a lot of songs that have such a fresh feel that it will surprise a lot of people.
You have a very unique style of playing. How does a jam session look like for you?
Alithia: Hahaha… oh my god… it’s very slow… everyone says their ideas and we just try them all… all of them… it takes a long time.
More plans for this year?
Alithia: We return to Oz after the tour, we play at Progfest and then get ready to release the new album! Next year we will release the album, tour Australia, tour Europe and release a film!
