Cu douăsprezece noi piese care să–ţi gâdile cele mai profunde adâncimi interioare şi o nouă expoziţie a torturilor emoţionale ale suedezilor de la Evergrey, „Hymns For The Broken” este o revenire la tumultul care i-a consacrat, precum şi la negura care ţi-o transmit prin fiecare firicel, într-o modalitate reîmprospătată şi mai actuală ca niciodată.
Cu un line-up din nou conectat care se reflectă şi în fluiditatea instrumentalului şi noi experienţe senzoriale, materialul debutează cu „The Awakening”, într-un mod cât se poate de sugestiv, pornind de la titlu şi până la detaliile care compun single-ul. O tărie năucitoare şi o revigorare a simţurilor, precum şi a stilului asemeni de tulburător emoţional dar renăscut din prietenia membrilor trupei.
„King of Errors” este un exemplu tipic de frumuseţe bântuitoare care se năpăstuieşte asupra ta şi te răscoleşte, cu melodii pe măsură şi chug-uri şi shred-uri care le întăresc baza, asigurate de Henrik şi Tom, precum şi aritmii calculate, curate şi cu cantitatea perfectă de energie puse pe masă de Jonas. Rikard îşi supune abilităţile armonice clapelor liant, alături de bass-ul neclintit al lui Johan.
„A New Dawn” se numără printre piesele de efect uşor de reţinut, pe când „Wake A Change” dispune de o alură de epic care se regăseşte şi în căldura vocii, dar şi în tonul melancolic al chitarelor alături de intervenţiile tobelor care stabilesc liniile de urmat, îndrăznind să le depăşească unde nu te–ai aştepta.
Una dintre preferatele mele de pe material, deşi acest lucru variază de la zi la zi, „Archaic Rage”, este un exemplu elocvent pentru tranziţia în stil care se distinge în sânul trupei, mai puternică ca niciodată. Cu un snare deosebit de puternic, un sunet modern şi o reflecţie asupra lumii care ne înconjoară, piesa reuşeşte să–ţi menţină atenţia cu fiecare secundă care se scurge, în repetate rânduri.
Cu o orientare puţin mai accentuată de djent, „Barricades” intră în scenă cu un ecou al vocii lui Tom completat de scurtele apariţii chitaristice şi clapele pregnante din fundal. O altă compoziţie care iese instant din umbră este şi „Black Undertow”, un single cu urcuşuri şi coborâşuri cât să te ţină în priză continuu cu un extra de suferinţă şi unul dintre cele mai frumoase solo-uri de pe acest album. Una dintre cele mai pline de venă compoziţii este „The Fire”, fiorul resimţindu-se liric, instrumental, dar şi în micile detalii care o compun, precum corul de copii. Toba îşi pune din nou amprenta puternic pe ansamblu, cu mult deasupra albumului anterior. „Hymns For The Broken” oferă într–adevăr un imn al celor pierduţi în intensităţile sentimentelor, alături de un aranjament instrumental fără cusur şi un Tom plin de patos.
Balada care uimeşte prin simplitatea sa, lăsată în grija pianului şi al melancoliei dureroase a lui Englund, „Missing You”, este urmată contrastant de „The Grand Collapse”, o închinare schimbărilor de tempo, nonconformismului şi renunţării la structurile predictibile. Cum ne-am obişnuit, „Hymns For The Broken” se pierde în finalul „The Aftermath”, o baladă în care cea care îl insoseste pe Tom este o acustică, de această dată. De la mijlocul ei simţim un crescendo al tăriei care evoluează spre un joc armonic între pian şi tobe şi o încheiere monumentală al unuia dintre cele mai bune albume lansate de trupă.

With a bundle of twelve brand new songs to tickle your inner depths and a new exposure of emotional torture from Evergrey, „Hymns For The Broken” is a return to the turmoil that established them to be who they are, as well as a return to the mist that shivers your every fiber with despair, in a fresh and modern approach.
With its tight line-up back together that reflects in the entire instrumentals’ fluidity and new sensorial experiences, the record debuts with”The Awakening”, in a more than eloquent way, starting from its title all to way to the those little hooks that are a part of it. A baffling force and a revival of the senses, as well as of the musical style, just as troubling emotionally but somehow reborn from the band’s unshattering friendship.
„King of Errors” is a clear example of haunting beauty that overwhelms and turns you inside out, with well-constructed melodies, chugs and shreds that reinforce the base that Henrik and Tom assure, as well as with calculated, clean arrhythmias, thrown in the mix with a perfect amount of energy by Jonas. Rikard subdues its masterful skills to the liason keyboards, alongside the unwavering bass.
„A New Dawn” is amongst those songs that catch on immediately, while „Wake A Change” has that allure of epic that can be discovered in the voice’s warmth, as well as in the melancholic guitar tone alongside the drums interventions that settle the boundaries to follow, but breaks them daringly when you least expect them to.
One of my personal favorites off this album, although this tends to variate every other day, „Archaic Rage”, is another fine example for the shift in style that can easily be distinguished inside the band, stronger than ever. With a mighty snare, a modern sound and a reflection upon the surrounding world, the track manages to capture your attention with each second that passes by, repeatedly.
More on the djent side, „Barricades” takes the stage with the soft echo of Tom’s voice, completed by the short guitar highlights and substantial keyboards in the background. Another piece that stands out is „Black Undertow”, a track that has that ebb & flow that will keep you captured constantly with an extra touch of suffering and one of the most beautiful solos on the record. „The Fire” is indeed „fiery”, one of those singles that has some weight, the powerful thrill conquering the lyrics, the instrumentals, as well as the little details, as its the case with the choir of children. The drums put their fierce fingerprint again on the whole, well above what was happening on the previous record. „Hymns For The Broken” offers truly an ode for those lost in the feeling’s loudness, along with a flawless instrumental arrangement and a soulful Tom.
The ballad that amazes by its simplicity, left in the arms of the piano and of the shattering melancholy of the vocals, „Missing You”, is followed up by the contrasting „The Grand Collapse”, a hymn to the versatile changes in tempo, the nonconformity and the relinquish of predictable structures. As we’ve grown accustomed to, „Hymns For The Broken” losses itself in its delicate ending, „The Aftermath”, another ballad during which the one accompanying Tom is an acoustic, this time around. From its middle section we hear a crescendo in strength that evolves towards a shifting game between the piano and the drums.
