Soen este un nume care deși ridica ceva sprâncene pe chipurile scepticilor în prima sa fază de evoluție, a reușit să învingă cu succes toate stigmele care-i erau asociate și să-și creeze o bază cu caracteristici unice, apreciată de din ce în ce mai mulți fani. Debutați în 2004, membrii Soen au impresionat întotdeauna prin accentul extraordinar pus pe detalii și pe materiale discografice curate, din multe puncte de vedere. Comparația cu Tool și-a pierdut din rost încă de la al doilea album al trupei, Tellurian, dar cu atât mai mult începând cu al treilea material, Lykaia, și recentul Lotus.
Martin Lopez și Joel Ekelöf și-au creat un nucleu propriu al perfecțiunii, atât instrumental, cât și vocal, pe care prea puțini îl pot ignora sau elimina cu argumente bine alese. Lotus revine, așadar, la doar puțin peste un an distanță de Lykaia, determinându-te să te întrebi cum de încă își găsesc inspirația, când alții se chinuie să o facă de vreo zece ani încoace.
Ei bine, Lotus își întinde povestea pe parcursul a nouă piese, debutul, Opponent, fiind o continuare a armoniilor care te-au abandonat în finalul Lykaia. Direct la subiect, instrumentalul te îngroapă într-un vifor al notelor, cu o amprentă cât se poate de Soen. Bass pregnant, tobe desenate-n aritmii și un tempo frumos construit cu inspirații când latino, când orientale, tranziționate-ntr-un solo emoționant, care schimbă încet registrul spre ceea ce definește Lotus. Versurile pline de-nsemnătate îți împrumută gândurile instant și te transpun într-un univers al izolării și solitudinii.
Lascivious deja iese în prim plan printr-o abordare cu totul nouă de ce ai mai auzit de la Soen până acum, numele făcându-i pe deplin dreptate. Plină de dependență și de explozii, piesa se bucură de o serie de tranziții fluente, chitara, percuția jazz și clapele făcând o pereche perfectă în a doua sa jumătate.
Martyrs amintește de trecutul trupei, orice ascultător putând auzi în cele șase minute o istorie întreagă, precum și o evoluție către acel ceva care-i face ușor recognoscibili în secunde. Interludiul instrumental îi oferă o nouă dimensiune și mai scoate ceva în evidență: interludiile, fie ele chitaristice sau de clapă, reprezintă un element-cheie pe noul album. Calitățile vocale ale lui Joel poate trezi invidie în orice vocal aspirant, prin claritatea și stăpânirea pe care reușesc să o transmită.
Lotus este balada materialului, noua Lucidity. Chitara stimulează visare încă o dată, printr-o prezență plină de ecou à la Gilmour, dar care captează tot centrul atenției înspre final. Convenant este a doua mare surpriză a albumului, după Lascivious, schimbând ritmul din nou, destul de pronunțat de astă dată. O alternare plină de balans între heavy și atmosferic dă naștere unei viitoare favorite a fanilor, fiind totodată și un moment de respiro de la amprenta Soen.
Penance încetinește tempo-ul din nou și aduce în prim plan influențe ceva mai experimentale, cel puțin în prima sa parte, cu influențe de The Dear Hunter pe ici-colo. Interludiul instrumental intră în opoziție directă cu outro-ul puternic. Aceasta te pregătește pentru acusticul River, care iese în evidență mai ales datorită slide-ului și chitarei foarte bine împământenită în blues.
Ajungem la Rival și revenim, de altfel, la bine-cunoscutul Soen. Execuție perfectă, vals continuu între bass și tobe, outro-ul repetitiv fiindu-i însă cel mai bun atu. Lunacy încheie materialul (poate dă nota următorului?) și se transformă ușor în cea mai bună uniune între materialele vechi și cel nou ale Soen.
Lotus marchează un nou traseu pentru trupă, un traseu sugerat prin același Lucidity menționat anterior pe Lykaia. Trupa își maturizează sunetul, punând din ce în ce mai mult accent și pe atmosferă și structură muzicală astfel încât totalul să nu obosească prin tehnică (pe care în mod cert o deține), ci să atragă prin compoziție.
Soen va veni și anul acesta în România, în cadrul festivalului Posada Rock, ce se va desfăşura în perioada 30 august – 1 septembrie pe Stadionul Municipal din Câmpulung Muscel.

Soen is one of those names that made some critics raise their brows in skepticism in its first years of existence, but that has managed to overcome all the stereotype and create a new and unique base, appreciated more so every day. Debuted in 2004, Soen has always impressed fans through its great attention to details and clean records, from many points of view. The comparison with Tool already had no point starting with the second album, Tellurian, and even more so going further into Lykaia and the recent Lotus.
Martin Lopez and Joel Ekelöf have created their own core of perfection, both instrumentally and vocally speaking, that very few can still ignore or dismiss using fair arguments. Lotus comes back, thus, at just a little over an year apart from Lykaia, to leave some question marks behind as to how they still manage to find the right inspiration, while others struggle to do so for over 10 years now.
Well, Lotus stretches its story throughout nine tracks, its debut song, Opponent, being a continuation of the harmonies that abandoned us at the end of Lykaia. Straight to the subject, the instrumentals bury you into a storm of well-chosen musical notes, with a touch of Soen. An in your face bass-line, drums full of arrhythmia and an increasingly beautiful tempo that sometimes leans into Latino, other times into Oriental, transition into an emotional solo, that slowly changes the pace into what defines Lotus. The lyrics, full of significance, steal your thoughts in an instance and carry you into an universe of isolation and solitude.
Lascivious already comes into the spotlight with a new approach to music unlike anything you have heard before from Soen, its name being a perfect fit. Filled with addiction and explosions, the track has a series of smooth transitions, while the guitar, the jazzy percussion and the keyboards join together into a perfect harmony in its second half.
Martyrs reminds us of the band’s past, with every listener being able to hear in its six minutes an entire history, as well as an evolution towards that IT that makes the band so easily recognizable. The instrumental intermission offers it a new dimension and draws out something more: the interludes represent a key element on this record. Joel’s vocal abilities can make anyone envious, through their clarity and command.
Lotus is the album’s ballad, the new Lucidity. The guitar spurs some eyes wide open dreams again, through its echoing presence, but also catches the entire spotlight towards the track’s end. Convenant is the second big surprise of the album, after Lascivious, by changing the pace again, even more so than the previously mentioned song. The alternation, full of balance between heavy and atmospheric, will make it a fan favorite, while also being a moment of respiro from that Soen fingerprint.
Penance slows the tempo down again and showcases some experimental influences, at least in its first half. The intermission is in direct opposition with the powerful outro. This prepares the listener for the acoustic River, that stands out specially because of the slides and the guitar that screams blues.
We get to Rival and we return, as well, to the well-known Soen. Perfect execution, a continuous waltz between the bass and the drums, and a repetitive outro that becomes its greatest feature. Lunacy ends the material (maybe sets the tone for the next one as well?) and slowly turns into the best combo between the old and the new Soen.
Lotus sets a new path for the band, one that was suggested through the previously mentioned Lucidity, on Lykaia. The band has matured its sound, focusing more and more on atmosphere and musical structure so that the total doesn’t overwhelm through technique (that it obviously has), but to attract through composition.
