Păstrăm numărul de piese incluse și pe cel de-al treilea material discografic al celor de la Riverside, Rapid Eye Movement, lansat în 2007. Albumul vine însă cu o noutate față de precedent menționatele, și anume divizarea sa în două părți: Fearless (primele 5 piese) și Fearland (următoarele 4 piese).
Albumul, parte dintr-o anunțată trilogie, alături de primele două materiale, și prin urmare ultima sa parte, este de altfel un hit or miss de excepție. Cu siguranță cel mai experimental de până atunci, acesta poate trezi controverse în rândul iubitorilor de clasic. Personajul care încerca să-și depășească greșelile și să spere la un nou prezent pe Out Of Myself își descoperă acum eșecul. Rapid Eye Movement devine, așadar, fără urmă de îndoială, cel mai întunecat și orientat către sine din cadrul trilogiei.
Debutat cu Beyond the Eyelids și o furtună de riff-uri și întortocheli prog, materialul reia în ritm de ecou amprenta deja clar definită a trupei poloneze. Elementul electronic leagă compoziția și schimbările ritmice continue într-un final apoteotic, cu un solo minunat, așa cum ne-am obișnuit. Nici Rainbow Box, următorul single de pe acesta, nu scapă din această eternă dezbatere. Un duo de heavy și melancolic, piesa oferă atât puncte definitorii pentru material, cât și câteva momente de intensă melancolie spre final.
Cu un bass greu de ignorat, O2 Panic Room devine instant un clasic. Ritmul cucerește pe loc, elementul de heavy dominând în continuare ansamblul, în timp ce Duda oferă o serie de inflexiuni vocale diverse, perfect executate. Cu un accent pus pe o tobă singulară, Schizophrenic Prayer, este al doilea mare experiment al albumului. Duda își îmbracă vocea în formă de instrument adițional oferind un registru ce trece cu ușurință de la spirit de alertă la armonii complexe. Parasomnia încheie cu Mr. Hyde prima parte a Rapid Eye Movement în care personajul face tranziția de la un curaj absurd, înecat în speranță, la un peisaj al fricii copleșitoare. Instrumentalul complex transmite urgența situației în timp ce actorul principal, vocea, își deplânge eșecul.
O acustică descuranjantă ne prezintă tărâmul promis (promise land) cu care trebuie să se confrunte personajul, opus așteptărilor, în cadrul Through the Other Side. Intervențiile vocale parcă repetă un de ce prins într-o buclă eternă, în timp ce balada vedetă, fără doar și poate, Embryonic, ia în captivitate auzul și sufletul. Lirica enumeră motivele dezamăgirilor, refrenul fiind o ancoră a unei ultimi speranțe. Cybernetic Pillow încheie interludiul acustic și ne îndreaptă către final cu o chitară care pendulează între heavy și melodic.
Ultimate Trip oferă o ultimă călătorie demnă de reținut pe parcursul a 13 minute, având în fundal un riff ce induce dependență. A doua sa parte prezintă unul dintre cele mai întunecate momente de pe album, cu ajutorul tranzițiilor între șoapte, chitară și clape subtile și dramatic, chiar și visător în final. Un complet de emoții cum doar Riverside poate crea.
Rapid Eye Movement este cu siguranță, așadar, cel mai experimental album Riverside de până atunci și încheie o trilogie totală a unor experiențe umane ce te pot atinge, prin toate mediile avute la dispoziție. Întunecat și captivant, materialul pune capăt unei forțe muzicale care și-a prezentat debutul într-un mod care îți spunea că era doar începutul.

The same amount of tracks welcomes us on this third record, Rapid Eye Movement, as well. Launched in 2007 the album brings something new to the plate though. It is divided into two sections: Fearless (the first 5 tracks) and Fearland (the next 4 tracks). The record, part of an announced trilogy, alongside the first two we have talked about, and therefore the last part of it, is otherwise an exceptional hit or miss. Definitely the most experimental out of the three, this one can raise some controversy among the lovers for a classic touch. The character presents his mistakes and hopes for a new present during Out Of Myself and is now discovering his failure. Rapid Eye Movement thus becomes, without a shadow of doubt, the darkest and most introverted record from the trilogy.
Debuted with Beyond the Eyelids and a storm of prog amalgamate, the material picks up, on rhythms filled with echoes, the well defined fingerprint of the band. The electronica ties the composition together and the shifts in rhythm into one majestic ending, with a wonderful solo. Rainbow Box makes no exception and doesn’t fall far out of the controversy. A duo between the heavy and the melancholia, the track offers defining points for the album, as well as some intense darkness towards its end.
With a very in your face bass line, O2 Panic Room instantly becomes a classic. The rhythm conquers on the spot with a heavy element commanding the ensemble, while Duda offers a series of vocal changes, perfectly executed. With a highlight on singular drums, Schizophrenic Prayer is the second biggest experiment of the record. Duda dresses his vocals in the shape of an additional instrumental by offering a register that easily shifts from a sense of alert to complex harmonies. Parasomnia ends with the help of Mr. Hyde the first part of Rapid Eye Movement, during which the character transitions from an absurd courage, drowned in hope, to a soundscape of an overwhelming fear. The intricate instrumentals showcase the urgency of the situation while the main actor, the vocals, bemoans the failure.
A discouraging acoustic presents the promise land that the character has to face, opposed to the expectations he had, during Through the Other Side. The vocal interventions seem to whisper on a loop a never-ending why, while the star ballad, Embryonic, captivates the hearing and the soul. The lyrics thread at the reasons of disappointment with the chorus transforming into an anchor for a last hope. Cybernetic Pillow ends the acoustic interlude and heads towards the ending with a crying guitar that turns into a pendulum between heavy and melodic.
Ultimate Trip offers a last journey worthy to remember, in its 13 minutes, while having in the background a riff that creates dependency. Its second half brings to our attention some of the darkest moments off the record through transitions between whispers, a subtle guitar and keyboards and the dramatic, even with a sense of dreaming at the end. A sum of emotions as only Riverside can create.
Rapid Eye Movement is without a shadow of doubt, thus, the most experimental Riverside album until then and ends a trilogy of human experiences that can touch the listener through all the mediums that the band had at its disposal. Dark and captivating, the record ends a musical force that presented its debut in a way that lets you know that it was only the beginning.
