Evergrey a revenit sâmbăta aceasta cu cel de-al 11-lea album al carierei și ultimul din trilogia începută odată cu reîntregirea uneia dintre cele mai cunoscute formule ale trupei din 2016, prin intermediul lansării a The Storm Within și continuată de Hymns For The Broken. The Atlantic pune așadar capăt uneia dintre cele mai personale călătorii vizualizate de trupă până în prezent. Departe de a aborda subiecte ceva mai ieșite din sfera realității, ba dimpotrivă, această trilogie marchează și o schimbare din ce în ce mai clară a stilului, care deși păstrează semnătura întunecată a trupei, este o plonjare înspre modern fără doar și poate.
Materialul conține zece piese care te poartă într-o călătorie a reconcilierii trecutului Evergrey cu prezentul, din punct de vedere auditiv. Mult mai apăsător și mai orientat spre heavy decât precendentele sale, The Atlantic debutează direct cu una dintre piesele folosite drept teaser, The Silent Arc, o compoziție cu multiple straturi, inspirată de spargerea studio-ului lor de înregistrări în timpul compunerii materialului. Un pendul constant între haos și liniște, single-ul ne desenează pe deplin sentimentul întregului material, devenind astfel un intro perfect în ultima aventură a trilogiei oceanice. A doua piesă care-i urmează, cea care se bucură și de un prim videoclip extras de pe album, Weightless, dorește să arate fațadele diverse ale albumului, dar și reîntoarcerea trupei către o parte a sunetului original. O baladă plină de riff-uri și ritmuri infecțioase, precum și de o percuție subtil construită în spatele piesei complexe, Weightless are tot potențialul de a deveni o preferată a fanilor, alături de anterioarele Missing You sau Distance. Dar aceasta nu va fi în final cea mai puternică baladă a albumului sau una clasică.
All I Have schimbă registrul spre tensiuni experimentale și o latură muzicală care îți va aminti poate de Katatonia, nelipsindu-i nici solo-urile minunate. Ea devine, de altfel, și una dintre cele mai reprezentative pentru talentul trupei de a readuce mereu în centrul atenției o melancolie de dorit.
A Secret Atlantis, asemeni A Silent Arc, te aruncă în mijlocul uraganului, intro-ul atmosferic sfârșind într-o nebunie instrumentală. Probabil cea mai complexă piesă a albumului, A Secret Atlantis reprezintă, cel puțin din punctul meu de vedere, întocmai ceea ce a fost și este Evergrey. Interludiul The Tidal este continuat fără schimbări bruște de End Of Silence, un single de cinci minute care concluzionează într-o oarecare măsură viziunea lui Englund pentru această serie. De la momente de claritate la cele de cumpănă, construcția piesei reușește să redea cu succes o arie largă de emoții. Văzută împreună cu A Secret Atlantis, ea arată dorința trupei de a pune bazele unui album mai heavy decât celelalte. Currents, în schimb, în opoziție cu anterioara, își are rădăcina mai degrabă în Evergrey-ul modern, al ultimilor ani. Aleasă, de asemenea, ca piesă teaser pentru album, cred că își justifică alegerea prin simplul fapt că arată o latură diferită a trupei comparativ cu celelalte două, și prin urmare și diversitatea materialului.
Cu un bass greu de ignorat intră în scenă Departure, una dintre celelalte balade nu tocmai clasice ale albumului, care continuă ideea din spatele a Currents și oferă o serie de momente memorabile, de la acustice, la clapele delicate care întrețin întreaga linie muzicală și până la vocea liant, mereu plină de simțăminte, așa cum ne-am obișnuit. The Beacon revine la noțiunile de început și aduce din nou, în prim plan, așa cum ne-am obișnuit cu vechiul Evergrey mai ales, o voce care narează în intro-ul său. Melodia, și mai ales refrenul piesei, așa cum a fost cazul și cu Currents, își va face culcuș în memorie chiar de la prima ascultare. Solo-ul din a doua sa parte îi dă un colorit în perfectă comuniune cu vocea.
The Ocean încheie The Atlantic cu o notă revenită de modern, care leagă cumva ideile trilogiei într-un final care-i dezvăluie povestea întreagă înainte de a-i pune capăt. Outro-ul apocaliptic redat de ecoul spart de tobele dure îți va hrăni dorința de mai mult.
The Atlantic va deveni un nou preferat al fanilor, cu atât mai mult al celor care sunt alături de trupă de pe la începutul anilor 2000. Satisfăcător atât pentru cei care apreciază modernul post 2016 al Evergrey, dar și pentru cei care iubesc melancolia unică și imediat reperibilă a trupei, The Atlantic se dezvăluie treptat ascultătorului, devenind cel mai puternic și închegat material din întreaga trilogie. Rămâne de văzut ce indicii lasă ascultătorilor despre viitoarele materiale pe care trupa le va lansa.
Evergrey vine și în România cu acest album, pe 12 aprilie în Form Space din Cluj-Napoca și pe 13 aprilie în Hard Rock Cafe din București.

Evergrey has returned this past Saturday with its eleventh record and the last of the trilogy that has begun with the reunion of one of the most known formulas of the band, back in 2016, and with the release of The Storm Within, continued afterwards by Hymns For The Broken. The Atlantic thus ends one of the most personal journeys that the band has envisioned until now. Far from approaching matters that fall outside of the reality spectrum, quite the contrary, this trilogy has marked a change in style as well, that although still has the dark fingerprint of the band, it also represents a deep dive into the modern.
The material is composed out of 10 tracks that carry you through a journey of reconciliation between past Evergrey and the present. Much more overwhelming emotionally and more oriented towards heavy than the past two records, The Atlantic debuts straight with one of the teaser tracks, The Silent Arc, a multilayered composition, inspired by their studio being broken in while recording the album. A constant pendulum between chaos and deaf silence, this single highlights the entire feeling that the record leaves behind, thus becoming the perfect intro to this last adventure of the oceanic trilogy.
The second track, the one that is the first to have a video as well, Weightless, wishes to show the different sides of the album, as well as the return of the band to its roots. A ballad that has numerous hooks and infectious riffs, as well as a beautiful thought of percussion built upon the complex track’s background, Weightless has all the potential of becoming a fan favorite, besides previous tracks such as Missing You or Distance. But this will not end up being the most beautiful ballad of the record or a classic ballad, for that matter.
All I Have changes register towards experimental tensions and a musical side that will probably remind you of doom prog, without lacking some wonderful soloing. It becomes one of the most representative tracks off the record for the band’s talent of always bringing to the stage a desirable melancholy.
A Secret Atlantis, much like A Silent Arc, throws you in the middle of the hurricane, the atmospheric intro ending in an insane instrumental drive. Probably the most complex sounding track, A Secret Atlantis, represents, personally, what Evergrey was and still is. The interlude, The Tidal, fades away in End Of Silence, a five minute single that somewhat draws a line to Englund’s vision. From moments of clarity to tougher choices, the song’s build up manages to showcase a wide area of emotions. Seen together with A Secret Atlantis, it demonstrates the band’s desire of creating a heavier record. Currents, though, in contrast with the previous track, has its roots in a more modern Evergrey. Chosen as a teaser song, as well, I think justifies that decision by simply showing the listener a different side of the album, unlike the other two.
With an ‘in your face’ bass-line enters the stage Departure, the ballad that I mentioned above and that steals the show. It continues the idea behind Currents while also offering a series of memorable moments, from the acoustics, to the delicate keyboards that maintain the entire musical construction of the track and to the bonding vocals, always filled with feeling, as we already know and love. The Beacon returns to some of the high-points at the beginning of the album and brings back, as Evergrey got us used to, a voice that narrates the intro. The song, and specially its chorus, as it was the case with Currents, settles down in your memory right from the first listen. The solo from its second half brings new colors to it, that are in perfect harmony with the voice.
The Ocean ends The Atlantic with a modern touch, that somehow binds the ideas of the trilogy in an ending that reveals its story before ending it. The apocalyptic outro made out of echoes and broken down by the insane drumming will feed your desire for more.
The Atlantic will become a new fan favorite without doubt, and even more so for those who have been with the band since the 2000’s. Satisfying for fans of the post-2016 and more modern Evergrey, as well as for the ones that love its unique and easily recognizable melancholy of the band, The Atlantic reveals itself step by step, slowly becoming the strongest record of the trilogy. We leave it to the fans to figure out what the future sounds like for Evergrey based on this.
